When Prohibition took effect on January 17, 1920, many thousands of formerly legal saloons across the country catering only to men closed down. People wanting to drink had to buy liquor from licensed druggists for "medicinal" purposes, clergy for "religious" reasons or illegal sellers known as bootleggers. Another option was to enter private, unlicensed barrooms, nicknames "speakeasies" for how low you had to speak the "password" to gain entry so as not to be overheard by law enforcement.
Wow, what an experience this was! I've lived in Newport News for 5 years, part of that time in City Center. And this location seems cursed, with several restaurants cycling through it over the last couple of years. Hopefully S&T will put an end to that rotation and establish a firm foundation.
A trip to Newport News area to visit our daughter and boyfriend and we come across Steak & Tonic, a new, high-end steakhouse with a broad, but selective menu handcrafted by the chef and owner. We got there for a late lunch or early dinner right when they were changing over from lunch and dinner.
My two girlfriends and I visited Steak and Tonic on 5/5/23. It was an awesome experience! The food was top notch!! We had the hydroponic mixed green salad, bread basket and butter, firecracker alligator bites, surf & turf pasta, dessert and a bottle of Rose'. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. The service was outstanding. I will definitely visit again soon to try the short ribs and bread pudding!
This was my first time there and everything was delicious. Definitely looking forward to going back and trying more. The service was also great and our server very knowledgeable, polite, and professional.
